Checking on Your Heart [Video]

Its a routine part of every doctors visit. We are listening for the rate of the heartbeat, how many beats per minute, whether there are any irregularities, whether we can hear any murmurs, which would indicate a valve issue, explained Dr. Ravi Ramaswami, a family medicine physician with Lee Health. Concerns that can be detected if the heart rhythm changes. So normally the heartbeats, it just goes one, two, one, two. When there is an irregularity, it could be one, one-two, three, one two, four, three, two, he said. But he says, an irregular heartbeat is not common, and it doesnt always indicate a serious problem. Rhythm of the heart can be related to either some kind of cardiac condition or it can be completely benign. It could be the heart arteries, it could be the valves, and also there are electrical impulses that govern the heartbeat, said Dr. Ramaswami. To get a better understanding, doctors may recommend an electrocardiogram, also known as an EKG, to investigate further. They strap some leads on you and then look at the reading that comes out on a paper that reveals the conduction of the heart, he said. An EKG can show cardiac enlargement, arrhythmias, cardiac irregularities, even show if a patient has had a previous heart attack. If needed, patients may be referred to a cardiologist for further treatment.
