When Kids Act Out [Video]

From crying to yelling to slamming doors, Golisano Children’s Hospital child psychologist Dr. Jason Sabo says how children respond to stress and anger can look differently depending on their age. “I see acting out as a form of communication. Kids are always communicating with us. In terms of when kids act out, there are so many different reasons for it. So it’s important for parents to identify why is the behavior there and what are they trying to accomplish?”He recommends addressing the child’s behavior with them and then teaching them appropriate ways to communicate their feelings. “If we see negative behaviors and especially behaviors that later on in life are going to cause a lot of problems it’s important for us to jump on top of those right away. Parents should respond the way they want their children to respond. Being patient and being calm is super important. If we are reacting in a negative manner, we are teaching our kids to react in a negative manner,” he said.It’s also important for parents to remember to exhibit the behaviors they want their kids to mimic. “So for instance, if I go through a drive-through and if they don’t give me the food that I ordered, how I respond to that is going to have a big impact on how my kids respond to conflict later on. It’s also important if we do find ourselves responding inappropriately go back and talk to your kids about it.
